The Boston Celtics’ 102-96 win over the New York Knicks at MSG was pretty chippy, almost as chippy as a PBA semifinals game. Okay not really, nothing comes close to the physicality of a playoff tussle in our own beloved L but the first cross-town matchup between these age-old rivals this season had enough mustard on it.
According to reports via CSNNE.com, Knicks MVP stud Carmelo Anthony was restrained by his teammates after the forward vehemently intended to pursue Garnett in Boston’s locker room.
Any tough loss wouldn’t have triggered Melo to go ballistic off the court. But this was the Big Bad Celtics, and Kevin Garnett, who apparently was on his grill, exchanging sweet elbows and eff you’s with him the whole of the second half.
Just by looking at the boxscore you’d get that Kevin Garnett — someone who’s recognized around the league as one of the most annoying trash-talkers — got the better of Melo. K.G. was phenomenal the whole game, shutting down NYK’s vaunted pick-and-roll on D and submitting an equally impressive 19 points and 10 boards at the other end of the court. While Melo, slowed down by the Jireh Ibaneses of Boston and pissed off by Mr. YipYapper, played his worst game of the season as he scored only 20 points on a head-scratching clip of 6-26.
Carmelo Anthony was reportedly not done with his postgame tirades. In the video down under, Lala Vasquez’s hubby can be seen waiting outside the Celtics team bus as he wanted a piece of K.G. According to witnesses, a verbal altercation ensued before Knicks coach Mike Woodson calmed his star baller down while the police and security stayed in between the players.
Of course Rondo was there.
