Kyrie Irving traded to Boston for Isaiah Thomas

When news that Kyrie Irving requested to be traded, there was a feeding frenzy. Several teams tried to acquire the All-Star guard. Irving was linked to teams like San Antonio, Phoenix, New York and Minnesota. As the weeks passed, the trade talks slowed down. it seemed like the season would start with Irving and LeBron James still playing together.

But Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics swooped in.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics have agreed to a deal that would send Irving to Boston in exchange for a package that includes another All-Star guard, Isaiah Thomas. The trade was first reported by Shams Charania of The Vertical.

The package that Boston will be sending Cleveland also includes Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and Brooklyn’s 2018 first round pick which Boston owns.

The trade is now official as the Boston Celtics have already confirmed their acquisition of Irving through their Twitter page.

Based on the package, this is a trade that benefits both teams.

The Celtics have been looking for a player that would vault them to the next level. Irving could the that guy. He’s a dynamic player that can take over games with his scoring and playmaking. He’s proven himself in the clutch numerous times. Boston’s young core, combined with Irving’s explosive game makes them a serious challenger in the Eastern Conference.

The Cavaliers on the other hand get a good return for the loss of their second-best player. They get another All-Star guard with a similar skill set to Irving. Thomas can play off the ball, he can hit the outside shot and he’s a crafty finisher. Getting Crowder and Zizic fortifies the Cavaliers bench. The real coup is the draft pick. The pick is projected to be a top three pick which means that the Cavaliers can get a foundational player they can pair with James or replace James if he does leave.

The battle in the East just got better.
