ROS 99 – Mahindra 95 (OT)
Not even a Gary David throwback game could stop the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
On Sunday, ROS was able to notch their second victory in the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup after surviving a furious rally from the Mahindra Floodbuster.
Down by seven points in the fourth period, Gary David reached into his bag of old tricks and went to work. From an 80-73 disadvantage, David and company were able to take the lead, 86-80 with roughly two minutes remaining.
After an exchange of buckets, the game was tied. Mahindra’s James White had a chance to win in regulation but his attempt unfortunately missed. In the extra period, the patience and maturity of Rain or Shine proved to be the difference. Jeff Chan and Shawn Taggart delivered the finishing touches as Mahindra failed to post enough points in overtime.
Despite the loss, White still put up monster numbers of 29 points and 21 rebounds. David meanwhile finished with 13 points, including three triples. Point guard LA Revilla returned to the Mahindra lineup after his three-day Gilas camp and contributed three points and eight rebounds.
For Rain or Shine, Taggart finished the game with 29 points on an efficient 10-for-18 shooting clip, and added 10 rebounds and two blocks. Beau Belga and James Yap combined for 24 points while Chan chipped in with 10.
Both teams shot poorly from the field, but the huge disparity in the game was the 70-47 rebounding edge held by the Elasto Painters. Mahindra was able to keep in-step thanks to their three-point shooting. As a team, they knocked down 13-of-38.
Rain or Shine tries to go for their third straight win next Sunday against the Blackwater Elite. On the other hand, the 0-2 Mahindra will look for their first victory against the NLEX Road Warriors this Friday.
