San Beda and Arellano open NCAA Season 93 with big wins

The San Beda Red Lions opened NCAA Season 93 with a big win over the San Sebastian College Stags.

The reigning NCAA Champions looked rusty in the early goings of the game as they allowed the Stags to stay within striking distance. San Sebastian took a three-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter and looked like they were going to upset San Beda in their opening game. But the Red Lions found their groove in the final minutes of the games as they unleashed a 17-3 run to close the game.

Robert Bolick, Davon Potts and transferee Clint Doliguez all came up big in the final quarter as they scored 19 of the team’s 26 points in the final quarter. Javee Mocon and Bolick led the team with 15 points apiece. Mocon also added 13 rebounds. Davon Potts scored nine points while Doliguez scored all of his six points in the final period.

Michael Calisaan led the Stags with 13 points and five rebounds. Enzo Navarro who transferred back to Recoletos was impressive in his debut for Baste with 12 points and seven assists.

AU Chiefs 91 – MU Cardinals 82

Last year’s other finalists the Arellano Chiefs also took home a big opening day win. Leading the way of the Chiefs now that Jio Jalalon has moved on to the pros is Kent Salado. He was dubbed The Conductor during last season’s partnership with Jalalon. Now, he’s still the Conductor but in a different capacity as he leads the Chiefs’ offense as their lead guard.

Salado scored 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists in a masterful performance. he scored 13 of his 24 points in the third quarter to keep Arellano afloat during a solid run by the Cardinals. The Arellano defense locked in during the fourth quarter where they limited Mapua to just 11 points whilse scoring 19 of their own to put the game away.

Salado was backed up by Michael Canete with 17 points. Laurenz Victoria and Andrew Estrella led the Cardinals with 23 and 19 points respectively. The Cardinals were playing without big man Allwell Oraeme who begged off from playing this season.
