San Miguel Beermen 104 – Barangay Ginebra 102, San Miguel takes 2-0 series lead
Marcio Lassiter came up big in the second half and overtime to lead the San Miguel Beermen back from a 15-point deficit. They take down Barangay Ginebra and now lead the series by two games.
Ginebra needed a scoring punch after losing in the first game. Coach Tim Cone dug deep into his bench and pulled out Prince Caperal. The young big man made an immediate impact in the game. He was an additional option as a post presence and off the pick-and-pop. He scored the majority of his 26 points in the first half to lead Ginebra to a 13-point lead heading into halftime.
Behind the efforts of June Mar Fajardo and Lassiter, San Miguel came roaring back in the third period. Fajardo dominated in the paint while Lassiter found his range from the outside. They cut the Ginebra lead down to just three points heading into the final quarter. Ginebra, playing with urgency was able to bring the lead back up to double-digits midway through the fourth period. But the Beermen weren’t fazed. They went on a 13-4 run to close the fourth quarter, highlighted by Arwind Santos’ clutch three-pointer to tie the game.
In the extra period, Ginebra took the lead early once again. Joe Devance knocked down a three-pointer to give Ginebra the lead, 102-98. But Lassiter scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 102 with less than 20 seconds left in the game. Ginebra still had a chance to win it but they couldn’t get the ball inbounded in the next possession. That led to San Miguel running a great play for Fajardo who got the ball on a cut to the hoop. Fajardo missed the layup but Lassiter was there to tip in the miss to give the Beermen the lead. With 3.2 seconds left and no timeout, Ginebra tired to rush for one final basket but Scottie Thompson bobbled the ball mid court.
