Christmas day came early for Cathedral High School in the form of Milan Acquaah’s game-winning trifecta, which lifted the Phantoms to a 65-63 triumph over the Chaminade HS Eagles in the championship game of the 10th annual San Fernando Valley Invitational Tournament, Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time).
With time winding down, the 6’1″ Acquaah drained the crucial three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Phantoms the crown. Acquaah finished with 17 to share team-best honors with Michael Obindu. This victory also propelled Cathedral to their sixth straight win while keeping their record unblemished so far in the 2014-15 season.
Despite being saddled with foul trouble all game long, Filipino swingman Kobe Paras still managed to contribute 11 markers for the Phantoms after dropping 30 in the semifinals against Alemany. The UCLA-bound Paras was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Tournament MVP Michael Oguine top-scored for Chaminade with 20. Jordan Ogundiran added 16 for the 8-1 Eagles, which absorbed their first loss of the season with this defeat.
